IFSM 430 Lab exercise 5 We will install an X server on the Windows machines. Copy \\kadenix\public\cygwin.zip and \\kadenix\public\xfree86.zip to some place on your Windows system. Unzip cygwin.zip (extract all files). Run the setup.exe Click "Run the program as student" if that window pops up. Take the defaults except: Choose "Install from Local Directory" Browse to the folder where the unzipped files are for the "Local Package Directory". "Select install root directory" should be the default F:\cygwin Takes about 10 minutes. Uncheck "Create Desktop Icon" and "Add to Start Menu" Ignore any error messages. cygwin is a Unix environment for Windows. Run it by running the cygwin.bat file in F:\cygwin. Unzip (extract all files) the xfree86.zip file into F:\cygwin\tmp folder (browse to it in the Extraction Wizard). Run F:\cygwin\cygwin.bat In it do: cd /tmp and then: ./Xinstall.sh Choose yes if it asks if you want to continue. 10 minute wait. Exit cygwin. Copy F:\cygwin\tmp\cmis325.bat to F:\cygwin\kadenix.bat Use Notepad to make 2 changes. First, change the line that is: SET CYGWIN_ROOT=\apps\cygwin to: SET CYGWIN_ROOT=\cygwin and change the line near the bottom of the file that is: start /B XWin -screen 0 1024x784 -query kadenix.dhs.org to: start /B XWin -screen 0 1024x784 -query 192.168.0.197 Save the file. Quit Notepad. Run the kadenix.bat file The X server is running on your system. It makes a login request to the Linux server. Login as ifsm430. The windows, taskbar etc are X "clients" running on the Linux box and are being displayed by the X "server" on your Windows computer. Click Home icon to run Konqueror file manager. Double click "your" file to see what happens: ________________ Right click "your" file, choose Properties. What is the size of the file: ________________ In Permissions, who is the User owner of the file: ___________, what group is in the file in: ____________ USer has what access permissions: ________________ Group has what access permissions: ________________ Others has what access permissions: ________________ Remove the Read permission that User has. OK. Double click "your" file to see what happens: _________________ Go up a level from your home directory. Try to go into altman folder, what happens: ___________________ Go in to will folder. Try to go into the 430ifsm folder where you can find your grades (information which needs to be confidential and accurate). Logout by clicking the RedHat and choosing Logout. **************************************** Back to Windows. Start Windows Explorer. Open a folder with some files in it. By right clicking on the bar with Name Size etc in the right pane a menu appears. Check Created and Accessed on, then in More check Owner. Who are owners of files in this folder: ________________________ Pick any file. When was it created:________________________ When was it last accessed:________________________ When was it last modified:________________________ Open the file. Refresh the file listing by F5 key. What changed? _______________ Open the file and make a change and save it. What changed? _______________ What is its Size: _________________ Right click it and choose Properties. What is its exact size: ________ How much disk space is it using: ___________ Right click it, Properties, Security. Choose Name student, click Deny for all Permissions. Apply it.
