IFSM 201 Lab exercise 1 Name(s):______________________ Using the Windows PCs in the lab. What is the make and model of computer: __________________________________ What make of mouse: ________________________ What type of mouse (mechanical (ball) or light): ____________ Where is the mouse made: ____________________ Where is the keyboard made: ____________________ How many keys does the keyboard have: _about 100__ How many LEDs (lights) does the keyboard have: _____ What type of monitor (LCD (flat-screen) or CRT (old TV)): _____________ What make of monitor:________________ What is the size of the monitor (diagonal from corner to corner of screen): _________ What kind of mechanical drives does the computer have: __________________________ (hint: there might be 2 of them) How many cables attach to the back of the computer: _______ What are these cables for (what do they connect to the computer): ___________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ The lab has a scanner. What is its make and model: ___________________________________________________ Where does its data cable attach to: _________________ On the floor of each row has a device with a cable to each computer and blinking green lights. It's the LAN network Ethernet switch. Each computer has a cable that connects the computer to the switch. The lights blink when data is going between the switch and the computer attached at the other end of the cable. What is its make and model: _______________________ How many "ports" (cable connection jacks) does it have: ____ How many cables are connected: _____ One of the ports is labeled Uplink. Which one: ______ The uplink is the cable that connects to another switch or to a router that enables access to other networks, including the Internet. The router is not in the lab. The lab has a printer. What is its type (laser or inkjet):__________________ make and model:_________________________________ Where does its data cable connect to:_______________ The lab has a wireless access point (WAP). What is its make and model: _______________________________ What are its LEDs labeled: ___________________________________________________ Where does its data cable connect to:_______________ There is a machine with a loud fan. What is its make and model: ________________________ Ask the lab monitor what it is used for:________________ Right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop and select Properties. (if this isn't allowed, see below for alternate ways to find some of this information). The General tab shows the make and model of CPU: _____________________________________________ The speed of the CPU is the GHz (giga hertz): _______________ A GHz is one billion "ticks" per second pulsed by the system clock that acts like a metronome to "push" the electronic activity in the computer. Amount of RAM memory the computer has is:___________________ CPU speed and amount of RAM are the two most important factors of the power of a computer. "System" is the operating system name and version: _______________________________ "Service pack" is a major updating of the operating system. What service pack, if any,:_______________ In the Computer Name tab is the Full computer name: ____________ and the Workgroup that the computer is in: ___________ ******** Alternate ways to find some of this information if My Computer Properties is not permitted: Start | Run | cmd then type ipconfig /all to discover the computer's "host" name:_____________________ Type systeminfo Host name: ________ OS Name:__________ OS Version:___________ Processor indicates speed:__________ Total physical memory indicates amount of RAM:______ ******** Launch Windows Explorer by clicking the Start button, selecting Run... and then typing "explorer" (without the quotation marks). Change the View so that Details are shown. In Tools | Folder options | View turn off "Hide extensions for known file types". Apply to All Folders. Click the + by My Computer Right click on C: (this is the hard disk), choose Properties. What is the storage capacity of this C: disk: _________ A GB is a "giga byte", one billion bytes. How much of the disk space is used and how much is free: ___________________________________ Put a diskette into the floppy drive (a diskette hahaha that's funny) or put a USB flash memory stick into the USB port. Use Windows Explorer to view the Properties of the USB drive. What is the capacity of the drive, in both bytes and MB: _____________________________________ Download the alice.txt file whose link is next to this assignment on the class web site. Save the file. Viewing the folder it's in with Windows Explorer. It's size in the Size column is reported as:_________ Right-clicking and selecting Properties reports its size in bytes as:__________ SKIP THIS PARAGRAPH: Click the Tools tab, click Defragment Now... button, click Analyze and get the error message! Well, if you could log on as the Administrator account instead of the lowly Student account you could see how fragmented the disk is and defrag it. "Fragmented" means the files on the disk are scattered in pieces on the disk. The more fragmented the disk is, the slower it is to access the files, since each piece requires a movement of the mechanical "arm" of the disk drive. Defragmenting is something you can do periodically to your own computer to improve its performance. SKIP THIS PARAGRAPH: On the front panel of the computer is a small LED near the power button. It's the hard disk activity indicator. Double-click any application program on the desktop and watch the LED blink furiously as the software is copied from disk into RAM.
