Use Packet Tracer to create the minimal network of one switch and two PCs.
Then do the cisco switch commands to see what's happening on the switch.

Put a "Switches" "PT-Switch" in the LAN.
  The switch does't need any configuration.
Put two "End Devices" "PC"s in the network.  
Use "Connections" "Copper Straight-Through" cable for each PC's connection to the switch,
 connecting the Pc's Ethernet port to any FastEthernet port on the switch.
Configure the PCs' IP Configuration: double-click a PC, then
  in "Config" | IP Configuration, Static, IP Address 
  type 192.168.0.100 for one PC, then Tab to get the default subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
  type 192.168.0.101 for the other PC. "
 Confirm they have the corect IPs by looking at the network diagram.
 Back in the PCs: in "Desktop" | "Command Prompt" | 
  arp -a    
  ping IP-address-of-other-PC   
  arp -a
 if ping works from both PCs, the network is running OK.

double-click the switch icon. Go into "CLI".
Use the switch commands in "Basic Cisco IOS switch commands" page.
This switch is right out of the box, hasn't had any configuration done to it
except its default factory settings.
