Learn and configure your personal desktop:

Remove the bottom panel that has the Window List.
Gnome Panel: to bottom.  Size, color, AutoHide etc
  Add Applets: 
    System Monitor: processor, memory, network, swap, disk.  increase width. once per second
    Weather.  Naha
    Disk Mounter
    CPU Fequency scaling ?
    etc ?
    
System Preferences:
    Desktop Background.  change to your liking
    Screen Resolution.   change to your liking
    ScreenSaver.  fullscreen previews
    Themes: change to your liking
    Keyboard Shortcuts: Window Management: Toggle Max. State: F2
                                           Close Window:      F4
                                           Minimize:          F1
     
Places: Home Folder  (file browser)

    
Familiarize yourself with basic applications:

Applications:
  Calculator.  advanced view
  Terminal.  font size: CtrlShift +
             multiple tabs  ShiftCtrl T
  Text Editor (gedit).  multiple files open in tabs.
  
Firefox web browser.

Graphics:
   Tux Paint.  make and save some images.
   gThumb.  view them.
   
OpenOffice: Word processor: make a document with 
            Spreadsheet
            Database
